All Walks: Caryn Franklin Lecture at Ravensbourne

Image is a touchy subject when it comes to women and fashion, over the years we've had sickly thin, caucasian 5 foot 10 models shoved down our throats thanks to fashion imagery and runways all over the world. But do these images really illustrate the women who buy the clothes and what affect is it having on us and our perceptions of beauty.
All Walks Beyond the Catwalk is an initiative created by Caryn Franklin that challenges the industry and the idea of 'perfect' that it has inscribed on our brains. Today Caryn came and spoke to us (fashion promotion) to give us more information on All Walks and to help us all think a little more about the pressing subject.
Fashion or gang rape?
Caryn has worked within the industry for around thirty years working at style title iD magazine and on The Clothes Show on the BBC, which means she's seen first hand how much fashion has changed over recent years. All Walks aims to inspire those in industry to use a more diverse range of models, diverse in race, size and age, as the constant use of stick thin caucasian models seriously affects young minds and implies to them that that is perfect and they are not.
Its also the imagery that can affect our future generations, images that are overtly sexual or imply drug use can be found on the new stands daily.
Caryn pointed out that you can't just do one successful campaign and hope the message sticks, you must reinforce it as often as you can. For example All Walks had a very successful campaign which starred models of all ages and sizes which featured in iD and at London Fashion Week. The campaign was a huge success and Caryn has worked hard to keep All Walks going strong.
It has been proven that women are more likely to buy a product if its advertised on a life size model, the average dress size in the UK is a 16, so how can we constantly advertise to consumers on size 0 models? For example, the recent M&S campaign featuring stars such as Tracey Emin and Helen Mirren has been a hit and the dress worn by Helen Mirren sold out almost immediately, proving the point that if the target consumer sees the product on someone more like themselves it really does sell better.
It really struck a chord with me, when Caryn mentioned about air brushing in beauty products, how they make you feel guilty if the product doesn't have the same affect on you as it does on the model in the advert and I really related, plenty of times I've tried mascaras and creams that haven't made a bit of difference and assumed it was my eyelashes or skin that was the problem.
Rhianna: Role model to your children?
Its not just fashion that will have a lasting effect on girls everywhere look at the like of Miley Cyrus and Rihanna, these two are posed as role models for young girls everywhere. Both often talk about drugs and both promote being dominated and make it look like the only way to success is to act like a slut. The images we see daily show women like a 12 year old boys sexual fantasy, as though women are nothing more than cliché objects of lust or degredation. And with the likes of Terry Richardson, the known sex pest, contributing to magazines such as Vogue will it ever end? Heres a quote from Richardson himself that particularly disgusted me; "I was a shy kid," he has said, "and now I'm this powerful guy with a boner, dominating all these girls." Is this right? Should agencies allow models to have to go through this as the only way to have a successful career? Emotional blackmail at its seediest
Miley Cyrus by Terry Richardson
The talk from Caryn really opened my eyes to look more closely at fashion imagery and also going in to advertising and being a future creative we can really make a difference. I will be creating a short promotional film with The Gibson Diaries for All Walks in a week or two so keep your eyes peeled for more info!

RAVENSBOURNE AT GFW

So, unless you've been living under a rock or ignoring my blog posts you'll know that this week was massive for the nations fashion graduates, Gradute Fashion Week finally came to Earls Court!
Being a Ravensbourne student I got the oppourinty to see our show and have a look round the exhibition space. It was super exciting to see the work of students from other unis and to see how it was displayed, moreover seeing the displays from the international collages was interesting. I really liked browsing the portfolios of our fashion promotion graduates to get a taste of degree work!
When 3:30 came around it was show time. I love fashion shows, the atmosphere is always so exciting and I always love seeing new talent and love the music the designers choose.
We didn't have exceptional seats but obviously they're reserved for VIP's and possible employers, oh and Susie Bubble! I didn't know what to expect but I was blown away by the talent, my personal favourites were the metallic holographic clutch by Sophie Malmgren and the pastels from Lydia Krause. I loved the song choice we had a bit of Venga Boys (mega nostalgia!) to a bit of Kanye.
We were all amazed when we came out and as the next GFW will be our show we have big boots to fill but we're all really excited about it and ready for the challenge!
In other news it was a great week for Rave, in Promotion we won 4 awards, Sophie Christiansen won the Per AQUUM marketing award, Rebecca Chambers won the Media Design award, Anne-Lina Dingsor Uudelepp and Emma De Vires won the Karen Millen Portfolio award. Moreover, four of our fashion students had their work selected for the prestigious gala show on Wednesday, they were Chen-Yu Wang, Patricia Williams, Phiney Pet and William Baxter. This is a huge honour and we've done so well I'm so proud! Heres a few cheeky pictures I took with my friend Grace, so check it out!

HÈRMES FESTIVAL DES METIERS AT THE SAATCHI

Just a few months ago, the Saatchi played host to one of the biggest French fashion houses of all time, Chanel. The Little Black Jacket exhibition was a huge success, so the question thats arisen now is; is this the start of a fashion takeover at the Saatchi?
They have now partnered with another prestigious French house, Hèrmes. Renowned for their beautiful leather bags and silk scarves, the latest exhibition looks at the craftsmanship behind their products.
I hadn't read much about the exhibit and only heard about it the day before so I went in with a completely open mind. All I can say is I wasn't  disappointed. I find some exhibitions quite tedious, some bore me to sleep if I'm honest and I can whizz round them within half an hour. Do not expect this here.
Hèrmes have got some of their most skilled craftsmen together to show you, the public, exactly how they make their luxury items and it really is so interesting. From tie making to creating the iconic Birkin everything you needed to know about Hèrmes accessories is here.
It was incredible to see the skill and patience that goes in to creating their most well known pieces. The Birkin, for example, takes 25 hours to create and each bag is created by just one person. They said that from a line up they can pick out who made which bag!
There was also a woman creating a Hèrmes diamond encrusted bracelet and another pulling thread from the infamous scarves to create different textures, the detail and precision was incredible One part that really amazed me was the woman who created the drawings for the silk printed scarves, being extremely unskilled in drawing myself, things like this never cease to amaze me. The patience and attention to detail was awe inspiring. They said it takes 600 - 800 hours to draw out a simple pattern and about 1200 hours for a detailed pattern such as the Indian lady seen in the photos. To have that much patience and skill really emphasises how much effort is put in to these products, it is so refreshing to know that luxury does still exist, it seems you really are getting your moneys worth with Hèrmes products and they have proved this in magnificent style.
The tables were laid out as they would be in the work shop, it was beautifully authentic and the use of French craftsmen shows how important heritage is to the brand.
So much thought was put in to the exhibit from the carpet to the ceiling. It was so different from the Chanel exhibition, and I feel a lot more exciting. I have never been to an exhibition like this before, it was so exciting and I hope more fashion houses plan to host exhibits like this in the future.
Being a student I found it great that the exhibit is completely free (yep, you heard correctly!) so I suggest you get down there asap. It finishes on the 26th May so hurry as you do not want to miss this!

VOGUE COMES TO RAVENSBOURNE - TALK FROM ALEXANDRA SHULMAN

 photo alexandrashulmanvoguerave_zps9f01dd95.jpg
So yesterday we had a VERY exciting visitor come and speak to us at Rave.
When I first got our time table for this term I was slightly in disbelief when I saw "Alexandra Shulman" on there, but no my eyes weren't decieving me. We had actually got Editor in Chief of the biggest fashion magazine in the UK to come and speak exclusively to us for a couple of hours.
Having loved fashion magazines from a young age and Vogue is probably the first 'proper' fashion magazine I ever bought I was hugely excited to hear from Alexandra. I want to work for a fashion magazine when I'm older I knew I would not miss this opportunity.
As soon as she walked in you feel a massive sense of authority from her although take away her designer clothes and she looks like your average business woman. The talk was rather personal and Alexandra mostly talked about her time at Vogue and how it has greatly progressed over the years due to supplements and online content etc. but she seemed somewhat down to earth and nice, explaining how she has plenty of time off to relax with her family and even admitting that when she was younger she wanted to work in the music industry and have a rock and roll boyfriend!
I loved her comment on the Vogue Festival which she said she loved as it was her idea. She also shed light on how to get an internship at Vogue which was obviously a question most students were eager to hear the answer too!
It was a really great and insightful talk in to Vogue and gave a bit more understanding off what goes in to making an issue of Vogue. It was amazing to hear from someone so powerful in the industry I hope to move in to and I'm so glad we were given this opportunity at Rave! The only photo I got (up top) is a shaky iPhone photo, apologies!

The events features some of the best universities from around the country, and for 2013 the event is being restructured. The plans include a restructure of the awards ceremonies, creating a more streamlined Gala Show experience. Of the new format, Chairman, Rob Templeman said; “We hope the new format will enable all our successful students to have a chance to show off their winning entries.” The Gala Show will now feature only the winners of the George Gold Award, the Women’s, Men’s, Knitwear, Textiles and International Awards. The other awards will be announced each day across the week enabling recruiters, media and other attendees at the event the time needed to see all the entries and also hear feedback from judges.
Graduate Fashion Week 2013 also is excited to announce the addition of new Universities to its fantastic roster, including Limerick School of Art and Design, Norwich University College of Art and University of Northampton.
With Vivienne Westwood sitting front row and praising Ravensbourne students in 2010, it is an amazing oppourtunity for design students.
