Met Ball 2014: 10 Faves

After somewhat of a long hiatus (it has been productive I promise), I reckon the Met Ball warrants a post. One of the biggest nights of the fashion calendar, this year the museum celebrates couturier Charles James, the theme of the evening; 'White Tie and Decorations' but as you can imagine not many kept that in mind. Here are my ten fave looks of the evening, in no particular order.

1. Emma Stone in Thakoon
My favourite from the night. I feel like this shouldn't work but I just really love everything about it. Her shoes even matched beau Andrew Garfield's jacket, adorbs.

2. Beyonce in Givenchy
I don't feel like justifying this, she is the queen. Love the veil and I will never get sick of her and Jay Z.

3. Gisele Bundchen in Balenciaga
Ever stunning Gisele could of turned up in a bin bag and still look flawless. *crys*

4. Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen in Chanel and vinatge Gianfranco Ferré
You either love this or hate it. Amongst an array of bright somewhat tacky gowns, in dark, vintage Victorian-esque gowns I think they both look so chic, kudos.

5. Victoria Beckham in Victoria Beckham
Beautifully understated in one of her own designs, wins award for best accessory of the night, we all need a David Beckham for special occasions, such as every day.

6. Kendall Jenner in Topshop
Stunning in nude custom made Topshop, weeping at her tiny waste. Cue week of starvation.

7. Jourdan Dunn also in Topshop
I'm so obsessed with Jourdan I probably wouldn't care what she wore. Also in custom Topshop, bit OT on the satin tho. Ultimate milf.

8. Diane Kruger in Hugo Boss
Diane always seems often overlooked even though she often looks impeccable, simple but effective in grey Hugo Boss.

9. Leighton Meester in Emilio Pucci
Hate gold and a deep v paired with a thigh slit sounds like a recipe for disaster, but she just looks sooo good.

10. Blake Lively in Gucci
Ugh, another power couple of the night Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds, so good looking it hurts.

A few notable fails of the evening, first RITA ORA, I can't even, I won't even. Alexa gets so much hate in the fashion industry, I tend to love her but I'm not loving this, how can you go from her incred tux look back in 2010 to this, how?! Maggie Gyllenhaal choses one of the worst looks from Valentino Couture. I hate saying anything bad about Lupita Nyong'o, I love her and she's beautiful but I can't even persuade myself to like this mismatched Prada ensemble.

Wonderland Week 1

Okay so it's coming up to a week since I started my very first internship, the original plan was the blog daily but I'm actually surprised myself how tired I've been this week, after a month of working at Next 10am starts are a god send but then I guess the week or two off I had before I came back to London made me completely lazy and the shock of having to cook and clean for myself hasn't helped.
Anyway, so last Wednesday I started my first ever internship at Wonderland magazine, after weeks of stressing that I wouldn't find a placement I finally got one doing what I wanted. I'm basically assisting the online editor Danielle and the editor Jack, so basically transcribing, writing blog posts and looking after social media etc. I've always wanted to work at a magazine so I was super excited but also completely shitting it to start. I have never interned before and don't know anything about the running of an independent fashion magazine so I was both nervy and excited about what I'd learn.
My first day I was eased in with writing just a few pieces for the website, I've done this most days, mostly reviews from LC:M and Milan Mens Week, I've also done some research and tweeting. I assume when I've been there longer I will be trusted with more but everyone is so lovely and its really chilled. Its nothing like people pre conceptions of fashion magazines from things like the Devil Wears Prada, everybody eats, no ones in heels and no one judges you for wearing a Primark coat (#guilty) its all very relaxed which is good and its such a small team thats its so much easier to get to know people and create better contacts. Theres another intern Gillian whos Irish and shes really nice as well.
I've only seen the editor in cheif when he comes up to go over the progress of the magazine and the flat plan, I love having a nose at all the stuff that comes in like editorials etc, listening to the conversations that fly about also adds to the entertainment.
We're working on the next issue atm which features guest editor Emma Watson and is released on the 7th Feb, being sent to the printers on Monday/Tuesday so its all a bit hectic at the moment as the last bits of work comes in and trying to decide on a cover is proving difficult!
Today I had much more to do which was good I felt busy all day, I transcribed an interview Jack did with Ryan Lo earlier today which took a while, transcribing a quitely spoken Chinese guy is harder than you'd think! I've also been shown how to post on the website as before I was just emailing my posts to Danielle so now I can just put them straight up and I've also been asked to assist Danielle on a Chanel shoot tomorrow!!! Im super excited to say the least but its an early start so I best get to bed and will post more updates daily/weekly/when I can find the energy ahhaha.

Nike RT: Riccardo Tisci and Nike collaboration confirmed

Over the past few seasons Riccardo Tisci’s most recognisable pieces have been his printed t shirts and sweats, cult pieces which merge high fashion with sporty streetwear. So it only makes sense that Tisci would collaborate with one of the biggest sportswear brands in the world.  The rumours have been flying around of a collab between the two since WWD.com posted about it earlier today, the news is expected to be confirmed later today. It is thought the collection would have a strong focus on footwear.
Not sure how Tiscis BFF Kanye West will take this blow after his infamous fall out with Nike after they denied West any royalties for the sales of Air Yeezys and Air Yeezy II’s after which he signed a deal with rival brand Adidas.

Inevitably Givenchy’s pieces become one of the most coveted items each season so its likely that if this collab goes ahead to same will happen when it hits the shelf’s.

Miu Miu's New Muses

Our hearts were all a flutter when we first laid our eyes on the new Miu Miu campaign featuring actress and ultimate girl crush Elle Fanning, but apparently that wasn’t enough for Miu Miu as this morning three more portraits were revealed for their Spring Summer 2014 campaign featuring three more of Hollywood’s hottest rising stars.
Elle Fanning has given her older sister a run for her money over recent years; getting her first big break in Sofia Coppola’s Somewhere she then went on to work with J.J. Abrams for sci-fi blockbuster Super 8. 2014 see’s the release of highly anticipated Disney live-action Maleficent in which Fanning plays Princess Aurora alongside a terrifying Angelina Jolie as the infamous villain.
Also featuring in the campaign is Elizabeth Olsen, who in the past has always been known as the younger sister of Ashley and Mary Kate but after a breakout performance in Martha Marcy May Marlene has proved she wont be staying in the twins shadows for long, Bella Heathcote who starred in Dark Shadows alongside Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter and Lupita Nyong’o who got her big screen debut in Steve McQueens 12 Years a Slave which is already looking to cause waves at this years Academy Awards, not bad huh.

Shot in New York by Inez and Vinoodh the campaign features each actress in looks from Miu Mius Spring/Summer 2014 collection. Poised perfectly in sets as distinctive as the actresses, the shades of blue, red and violet compliment the prints and materials to create a truly striking campaign that flirts with sexual femininity, classic demure pieces with an edge.
Thick wool stockings are in rich tones of red and yellow and paired with ruby red Mary Janes or lace-up knee-highs. In one shot we see Bella looking perfectly demure in a good girl coat then the next Lupita works a bad girl bustier dripping with jewels, each effortlessly translating the new spirit of the Miu Miu woman.

How To Spot A Fashion Week Faker

Many moons ago, fashion week was an event hosted simply to showcase fashion and the talent of some of the worlds finest designers, it has now become a spectacle, a circus of sorts, for the people not the clothes themselves.  For one week, Somerset House becomes the stomping ground for nobodies pretending to be somebodies. How do you spot these fakers you ask? It’s easy just look out for these four tell tale signs.

Extensive Loitering
These people live in hope that they’ll be “discovered” or land themselves a place on a high-flying street style blog, ambitious huh. They’re nowhere near important enough to be invited to any shows, so the likelihood is they will spend their entire day/week stumbling around the infamous cobbles, so if you spot a couple of faces you recognize but can’t put your finger on where you know them from its probably because you don’t, you just saw them doing the same thing 2 days prior.

'Comical' Fashion Tees
The rise of the ‘ironic’ fashion tee has, believe it or not, had one advantage; it makes these nobodies stand out like crazy. “Too bad I can’t afford a real Celine tee, instead I’ll wear this comical ‘Feline’ tee to make people think I’m hip and don’t give a fuck”. See also; ‘Comme Des Fuckdown’ and ‘Aint Laurent Without Yves’ or perhaps most tragic ‘Ballinciaga’, totes hilar babe.

An Outfit Consisting Of Every Garment They Own
A sure fire way to get spotted at fashion week? Wear anything and everything in your wardrobe.  People go out of their way to dress as outlandishly as humanely possible, which causes a few raised eyebrows, a few “oh so chic” ’s but ultimately begs the question, do you seriously dress like this on a daily basis? Like you’ve rolled in superglue and ran through Susie Bubbles (and the entire neighborhoods for that matter) wardrobe? Well, each to their own I guess.

Non-stop Mentioning of Their Blog
Lastly, they’ll be swaning around in ridiculously dark sunglasses thinking they’re the next Anna Wintour. In fact, they just spend their evenings copying news stories from vogue.com on to blogger.com in hope one day they’ll find themselves tucked front row between their new BFF’s Alexa Chung and Pixie Geldof. If (god help you) you have the misfortune of conversing with the fashion week nobodies, I suggest you mentally tally how many times they mention their awesome fashion blog or perhaps countdown how long it takes them to mention it, you never know it could make the conversation slightly entertaining.

Hello, My Name Is Paul Smith

If you're visiting London between now and March be sure to stop by the Design Museum to check out the new Paul Smith exhibition. The massive exhibition finally opened last week and is already receiving rave reviews. Curated by Donna Loveday, the museum is hoping that the exhibit will rival its previous (and record breaking) Louboutin exhibition for popularity.
It is said to give an immersive insight in to the world of all things Paul Smith, Loveday stated that it has been curated to appeal to a wide audience and is confident it will be a success, especially with Paul Smiths stellar reputation however they're promising that even new fans will find out something they don't know about the menswear designer.
You'll have to opportunity to delve in to all things Paul Smith as you take a journey through every chapter of Smith's lengthy career starting at his very first store. A tiny 3 x 3 metre boutique first opened in Nottingham in 1970, well a recreation obviously. Then you can take a look in to the makeshift dupe of the designers office and all the wonderful things you'd find in their, collected over the years from his many travels around the globe.
Paul Smith and Donna Loveday worked very closely to create the showcase to take you inside the mind of one of Britain's most famous designers. So whether you're a Paul Smith fan or not, if you're looking to be inspired or just fancy a nice day out, get yourself to the Design Museum!

Do Your Bit: Small Business Saturday 7th December

In recent years, the British high street has been slaughtered by the ongoing recession, we've lost an array of British manufacturers from Woolworths to Republic, the Great British high street is soon becoming a thing of the past with consumers looking to spend more on luxury goods, luxury and economy (Primark etc) are two of the most successful markets at the moment.
Small, independent, local business are also being hit hard, which is why American Express came up with the 'Small Business Saturday' initiative which has now made its way over the pond to the UK. It basically encourages the public to, just for the one day, support their local stores and shun the massive chain supermarkets and restaurants. The idea started three years ago in the US to help small firms survive competitions from mainstream rivals, it boosted the turnover of small business by £3.5 billion.
It only makes sense that this idea would work wonders in the UK, MP Chuka Umunna agreed and so decided to start one up over here. The initiative has been supported by a host of high profile names such as Dragons Den's James Caan, Mary Portas and Made in Chelsea's Proudlock.
December 7th will be 'Small Business Saturday', so make sure to support your local butcher, restaurant, corner shop or vintage store next Saturday!
